Research Interests

We are interested in neuroinflammation as a therapeutic target for neurodegenerative diseases, mainly Alzheimer's disease. At the moment we are studying the neuroprotective action of estrogen compounds (estradiol and selective estrogen receptor modulators) on glial cells, the inflammation mediators, as a plausible therapeutic strategy to protect microglia and astrocytes from inflammatory challenges. In the present we are working on cell cultures (primary glial cells and cell lines).  In the future we will study the neuroprotective effects of estrogens in vivo. We are also interested in neuroimaging of inflammation and markers development as an early detection method of neurodegenerative processes as well as longitudinal studies of estrogens effects on neuroinflammation in transgenic mice.
